Frontier Bushcraft is thrilled to announce the return of our Northwoods Winter Experience for 2026.
Set in a pristine backwoods area of Ontario, Canada, this winter trip will run 24th January to 8th February 2026.
This expedition offers a rare opportunity to master essential winter wilderness living skills while navigating the stunning, snow-covered landscapes of the Northwoods.
Instructors and guides on this trip are Paul Kirtley, Kielynn Marrone and Dave Marrone.
Participants will develop practical skills in cold-weather bushcraft, snowshoeing, firecraft, and shelter building, alongside techniques for safe travel and navigation across frozen waterways and in deep snow.
This immersive experience is designed for those ready to challenge themselves, building resilience and self-reliance in an awe-inspiring setting.
Some feedback on the Northwoods Winter Experience from previous participants is below…
“The Northwoods Winter Experience is a great combination of being able to learn wilderness skills from people who are very experienced and highly skilled in this environment, then taking that knowledge we learned in the first week and putting it into practice in a self-sustained multiday trip. It’s a beautiful part of the world. Traveling with the toboggan is such a neat way to travel and experience the area whilst still living very comfortably, being warm and eating well.” – Ben Atton, Staffordshire, U.K.
“The Northwoods experience has had such a powerful effect on me in so many ways. Not only have I gained skills and experience, but also a greater sense of meaning in my pursuit of outdoor competency. I now can’t wait to head back to the Northwoods and reconnect with such a magical environment.” – Tommy Andrews, Surrey, U.K.
“For me the most enjoyable part was the trip element where everything you have learned in the previous week comes together. It’s there that you really see the importance of all the training and routines that have been built up during the week. Had it been colder, that would have been even more obvious in certain aspects. It never got old, walking out on to a frozen lake and the morning there was all the frost on the trees was simply magical. I thoroughly enjoyed everyone’s company on the trip and it felt like everyone really pulled together and shared all the tasks and responsibilities on the trip as well as getting all the toboggans from A to B on the portages. For me, there was the right amount of physical challenge as well as time to learn new skills such as ice fishing, tree & plant ID walks and the hike up the mountain. It never felt like there was too much of one thing over another, so I enjoyed the variety of experiences during the trip phase as well. I would just like to thank you really as well as Kie and Dave for putting it together and making it such a wonderful experience that I took so much away from. It was great to spend time with you and I definitely hope to come on another trip at some point in the future!” – James Werb, U.K.
“Attending the Northwoods Winter Experience with Paul Kirtley at Frontier Bushcraft & Lure of the North in Canada has been hands down one of the best outdoor experiences of my life. Everything from the location, catering, logistics and instruction is exceptional. I honestly cannot find a flaw in any aspect of the trip and cannot speak highly enough of this experience. I will gladly travel from Australia to the other side of the world again for another experience with Paul & Frontier Bushcraft!” – Nero Buys, NSW, Australia.
“The incredible beauty of Canada was so uplifting. I have always been a huge fan of going into the deep backcountry of boreal forests, but this was the first time doing so in the winter and trekking across the ice. The entire experience was spiritually uplifting! Would I recommend this trip? 100% YES!!! This is an amazing trip for anyone wanting to learn about the northern outdoors, looking for a great team building getaway, or simply trying to disappear from the daily hustle and bustle for a couple weeks. If there are spots available, take this trip; you won’t regret it!” – Charles Ciccarelli, Alabama, USA.
